Small web sites
If you have the text and images ready I can usually build a starter web site in a matter of hours for a highly competitive fee.
That’s a full service, including:

Larger sites
Firstly what is a larger site? Typically in the range 10-50 pages where “a page” is approximately equivalent to a page of A4 mixed text and images. I only take on a couple of larger projects a year and seldom consider anything over 50 pages. On the other-hand, because I use WordPress adding further pages yourself is possible without a lot of training and if you hit problems I’m available to offer a guiding hand.
The main differences are timeframes and cost, however in addition to the above there may be some more complex needs. My solution to those is always to look for the most cost-effective option based on my years of experience including coding skills.
Ecommerce
I no longer create or maintain ecommerce sites. I don’t believe it is appropriate for an ecommerce user to be reliant on a one-person business, in the event of a major problem you need to be certain of prompt assistance. I have fixed problems remotely while on a cruise ship to Greenland but it wasn’t easy on slow connections without my full toolkit and I’d rather enjoy my holiday!
Internet programming
There are times when what you need may need specialist program coding. I have experience with numerous computer languages. In respect of the Internet the most use will be PHP. I’m also competent with the other core internet technical requirements including CSS, Javascript, HTML, database design and configuration.
Where possible I use off the shelf open source components to keep the cost down.
I also own an extensive library of commercial web development tools usually with lifetime licenses for unlimited web sites.
Advice and guidance
Maybe you are suspicious of advice you’re being given. Perhaps you feel you’re being given the easy answer, perhaps an expensive solution where something simpler would be better suited. Or the opposite, you’re getting a cheap fix when you need something more robust or feature-rich.
Have you ever been stuck in the middle between two suppliers both of whom blame a problem on the other? I can get to the bottom of that. Sometimes I’ve had to collect the evidence to prove one of them wrong to get some action.
Fix problems before they happen
Please don’t wait until things go wrong. If you don’t have a comprehensive recovery plan in place I can help create one. That’s like insurance: nobody wants to pay the price but when things go wrong that cost seems a bargain.
At the first indication of any kind of problem ask for help, it won’t just go away by itself. Ill-advised attempts at fixes can make things worse. The process must be: secure the position to prevent the problem getting worse; diagnose the root cause; if it’s a complex issue consider temporary remedies; fix the root cause; test; take backups; document the issue.
Copy writing
A web sites has a purpose. You may want to inform, engage, sell. Whatever the purpose articulating it in clear succinct plain English is basically a marketing task. Your website content has an ultimate goal, commonly that is to get the visitor to take an action.
Writing some copy is easy, getting it right, directing the visitor towards your goal is difficult. At the very least a third party critique can help.
Web site moves
The time may come when you need to move your web site to a different web server.
That’s seldom straightforward. Even with all my years of experience having undertaken hundreds of moves it’s not uncommon to find some pecularity that needs special attention.
