  • Email performance problems Feb 2008. We saw a major slowdown in email throughput in early February. The root cause was the way some broadband ISPs (internet service providers) were handling spam. Our mail servers were no longer able to tell the difference between delivery to them being rejected as spam and their mailservers being out of action. Consequently our servers kept trying to send the messages for several days before giving up. This resulted in large queues of undelivered mail which delayed legitimate mail. The problem has been fixed but to prevent a recurrence accounts on our new and more powerful server cannot forward mail to ISP mail accounts unless routed first through a spam filtering service. Our preferred alternative is to provide mailboxes on our server. We will not make our usual charge of £10 p.a. for one mailbox (additional mailboxes will attract the charge).
